Generic Unit Request

Postby adamsderk » Wed May 20, 2009 4:47 pm

Greetings,

With the new rewrite, I'm going to simplify things to get the full gameplay... then focus on art content. Now all of the existing models will be used, but to start things out, I'm going to use a generic place holder for each unit class. What I need are models with a uv map, but no textures (these are supposed to be place holders). I will generate some generic textures for each unit for each faction.

The models should not look like any actual units (except infantry), rather an average of all the units in a specific class or a general representation (kind of like a 3D representation of the character sheet armor diagram). What I need are:

1. Foot Infantry (Hana)
2. Wheeled Infantry
3. Tracked Infantry
4. Hover Infantry
5. BattleArmor
6. ProtoMech
7. Man-legged Mech
8. Chicken-legged Mech
9. Dog-legged Mech
10. Quad Mech
11. Tracked Vehicle
12. Wheeled Vehicle
13. Hover Vehicle
14. VTOL Vehicle
15. Naval Vehicle
16. Airship (balloon) Vehicle
17. Conventional Aircraft
18. Aerospace Aircraft
19. Aerodyne Dropship
20. Spheroid Dropship
21. Jumpship
22. Warship
23. Space Station
24. Satellite

Bold are finished models.

The models should not have weapons, as usual. And the polys should be kept between 1000 and 2000, preferring the low end.

Smoking Mirror,

If you are still around, I'd like some training on Blender and if you could make animations for the first 10 models, I'd be grateful.

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm working on a aerodyne dropship which will be converted into a paper model to use with my mechs.
Maybe you can also used it as generic unit. I have added some details like little wings.
If you want to use it, I have some questions:
- Must the interior be modelled or not? (I can do it modular like the truck SM made)
- How many mechs (if it's a mech transport) is it supposed to carry?
- Must the texture be completly blank? (since I will convert it into paper, I will create my own texture)

PS: I forgot to mention that I've managed to export my model from metasequoia into 3DS or OBJ with the UV mapping but I have a strange problem, I can't import them into Blender (my OS is Ubuntu 8.10). I have no error message but when I try to import something Blender freezes. I'm not sure but I think it also affects models made by other people.

1. Infantry

Will this do?

1308 polygons.

Hana,

It will do veeeerrrry nicely. It could very easily be the final one as well.

Are you interested in the motorized infantry?

Thanks.

I could possibly make the three types of ATV to use with the soldier, if that's what you mean.

Something like a 3- or 4-wheeled ATV, a snow mobile type (for tracked) and a hoverbike. Maybe even design a hard mount so you can add the MG, S. Las, or SRM onto it.

Hana,

You got it, including the hard mount.

Optional... I would prefer if the soldier and ATV were under 2k polys. Could the existing soldier be reduced and permanently mounted to the ATV? The only animations would be to twist the arms and handlebar (if it has one) and the tire/ski/vent.

Thanks.

Reduced? Remove the belt pouches and that'll cut down a few dozen polygons. Otherwise the head, hands and feet would have to be reworked. Mounting the model I created would require rigging and posing and I HATE rigging models.

Mostly because I never could do it properly...

That and you still need weapons for the three types of standard infantry.

If you want 2k combo, that would leave the ATV to be at around 700 polygons. I think that's do-able for a simple vehicle. Especially if I make a base sled for the main vehicle, then create separate motive systems to stick onto it.

Hana,

Your soldier is so good, that I'd be willing to push the polys up to have the same quality. So, make the ATVs at a quality you are happy with while being conservative and I will put the soldier on it.

Also, you did hit on the weapon issue. I'm planning on having:

Ballistic rifle
Energy rifle
MG
SRM
LRM
Flamer

If you want to do them, you will take the whole infantry model set. If the "hand mount" weapons for the foot infantry were the same models, but embedded in the weapon mount, on the ATVs, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.
